Dear Parents/Guardians of Orchestra Students,
Orchestra Boosters is a non-profit group that exists to support the Orchestra program. We provide volunteers at various events such as Orchestra Fest and at Solo and Ensemble and Large Group Festival. Money from our fund-raisers goes directly back to the students. Each school has an account with us to help pay for things like instrument repairs, sheet music, class trips and retreats. Every year we send the middle school orchestra students to a special performance of the Milwaukee Symphony. We have an ice cream party for the beginners' summer orchestra, and a pizza and pool party for the cadet and advanced summer orchestra. For the fourth year we are offering summer music camp scholarships at the middle school level. When our funds allow, we would like to start doing more for the elementary and high school students.
Looking back on last year, Orchestra Boosters has a lot to be proud of. We've tried some new ideas, like our t-shirts that we've been selling at the school concerts. Each year we are going to offer a new design. We held our first Afternoon Tea , where students performed, parents and teachers socialized, and we raised enough with our raffle and silent auction to enable us to award more summer camp scholarships than the previous year. We are hoping this tea will become an annual event, much like the Band Booster's Ice Cream Social. Also new last year, students had the opportunity to get their picture taken in their concert dress with their instrument before Orchestra Fest.
At
this year's Tea, to be held on Sunday February 24, 2008 from 1-4 pm at the Woman's Club of Kenosha, we are incredibly lucky that Chicago-area violinist
Rachel Barton Pine will be our special guest. Ms. Pine is a world-class musician, and loves to share her passion for the violin. Our students are going to benefit enormously from this opportunity to hear her play and ask her questions.
Also at the Tea, guests will be able to bid on
Painted Violins, produced in collaboration with Lemon Street Gallery. Pictures of each violin can viewed on the "Afternoon Tea" page of this web site. This is going to be memorable event for the whole community. I hope it draws attention to the fact that Kenosha has a real jewel in the music programs offered in our public schools, and that they are worth while and worth supporting.
I encourage any and all parents/guardians that are interested in our organization to feel free to attend our meetings and give us your in-put. You may attend merely to observe. No large commitment is necessary.
You can be a positive force in KUSD’s music program!
Sincerely,
Susan Jensen
